When Panasonic launched the ultra-mobile Toughbook U1, it introduced a new feature – twin hot-swappable batteries. Customers immediately saw the value in this function, and Panasonic continued to integrate twin hot-swappable batteries in the Toughbook H1 Health and H1 Field.

The hot-swap capability means that a device includes two high-capacity battery packs, not merely a main battery and a small “bridge” battery. This allows users to change a battery without having to turn the power off or reboot the system, extending running time. Plus, it removes the burden of having to swap your main battery in a very short time, which is not always practical. Using a battery charger, you can keep spares fully charged and take them with you. In situations where you can’t run on AC power or recharge batteries, this reserve power can make a significant difference.

For nurses or other mobile workers that select a device from a number of units on a charging rack, Panasonic has designed the C1 to clearly indicate up to four charge levels at the front edge of the case. At a quick glance, you can tell how much power each battery has. Without this feature, machines would be selected at random. If a device with a low charge was chosen, the battery could die during offsite duties – resulting in significant downtime and lost productivity.  Of course, the ability to swap in a charged spare could help mitigate that.

To learn more about the island, a team of European and Indonesian explorers, scientists and filmmakers established the Heart of Borneo Charity to explore the unknown species and indigenous people in the region. The team’s research would in turn be used to inform the media, empower local people and provide teachers with an educational resource, which can potentially help conserve one of the most biodiverse and threatened areas of the rainforest.

In an effort to provide more objective evidence in court proceedings, thousands of law enforcement agencies have turned to digital video capture. Even in a time of budget cuts and restricted spending, agencies understand the benefits of investing in these technologies.

Police officers are welcoming the ability to “show our view and our side of what’s going on,” according to a San Jose officer testing out a new head-mounted video camera. High-resolution digital video offers clearer audio/visual evidence than the often grainy cell phone videos used to incriminate police officers. The quality of evidence from digital in-car cameras, even set at the lowest resolution, compression and frame rate, are still better than most cell phones and VHS tapes.

Using Panasonic’s Arbitrator 360° system, police dispatchers can monitor each patrol car from headquarters, and in turn quickly spot when an officer is in need of support. Dispatchers can even zoom and increase the frames-per-second remotely to enhance video details.

Texas Tech University Reduces Parking Violations By Using Panasonic Toughbook U1

The Texas Tech University Parking Services team had a growing problem of receiving fraudulent and duplicate parking passes on game days. Their outdated handheld computer systems lacked the capability to detect phony passes, and unauthorized vehicles were crowding the lots. "I was recently on a research expedition with The North Face and The Mayo Clinic on Mount Aconcagua (6,962 m 22,841 ft): the highest mountain in the America's. In an effort to more fully understand the limits of human adaptation, we developed a unique program to test and evaluate individuals who regularly demonstrate elite level performance in adverse environmental conditions. The program aims to use this knowledge to expand the limits of human performance in adverse conditions, to test new technologies that remotely monitor human physiology, and to develop educational materials that disseminate the results of this research. The information gathered from this testing and analysis will provide new knowledge about the limits of human performance and aid the development of new technologies that will allow physiologic monitoring in a non-clinical setting. Since many human diseases force clinical patients to their physiological limits, knowledge gained from athletes pushing the boundaries of human performance in extreme environments promises to advance the care of patients, especially those with cardiac and/or pulmonary disease.

In order to properly monitor individuals in the field and collect data in these adverse environmental conditions, we needed a computer that would survive the expedition and withstand the unpredictable variables of the Mountain. We decided to go with two Fully Rugged Toughbook 30's. The Toughbooks were used the entire expedition, from Mendoza (2,428 ft), Confluencia (10,498 ft), Plaza de Mulas 13,779 ft), Plaza Don Fernando (15,748 ft), to Plaza Don Benegas (17,700 ft). The Toughbooks withstood temperatures down to -20 C, winds up to 40 mph, and various extreme snow/ice conditions. It was strapped to the backs of mules; as they road through streams, rain and snow storms, and was thrown in multiple packs on the go, during many rugged trips up the mountain. The Toughbooks survived through it all, and fulfilled a critical role in completing the task we set out for."
