Havis Weatherproof Toughbook 19 Docking Station Braves the Elements - Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Brave the Elements

If you work outside, you know weather is a factor in everything you do. With the Havis IP65 Weatherproof Docking Station for the Panasonic Toughbook 19, the weather won’t affect your mobile computing. Building on our reputation of designing the industry’s best mobile computing solutions, Havis has developed a lightweight and strong design that is built with theft deterrence, longevity, stability and the elements in mind.

What Does IP65 Mean?

Ingress Protection rating determines the ability to protect enclosures from dust and water. The "65" means your docking station is able to withstand the highest ingress rating of "Dust Tight," and is able to protect against jets of water from every direction, a force similar to that of heavy seas.

Protect your laptop in the following applications and more:

  • Marine & Border Patrol
  • Boating
  • U.S. Armed Forces
  • Public Works
  • Fish & Boat Commission
  • Game Commission
  • Department of Agriculture
  • Mining & Logging
  • Construction & Logistics
  • Weather Research

Swappable batteries useful for Mobile Professionals - Monday, October 03, 2011

Extended battery life is essential as these technicians are often in the field for an entire shift.

As a result, Panasonic has always offered industry-leading battery life in its rugged line of Toughbook mobile computers.

When Panasonic launched the ultra-mobile Toughbook U1, it introduced a new feature – twin hot-swappable batteries. Customers immediately saw the value in this function, and Panasonic continued to integrate twin hot-swappable batteries in the Toughbook H1 Health and H1 Field.

The hot-swap capability means that a device includes two high-capacity battery packs, not merely a main battery and a small “bridge” battery. This allows users to change a battery without having to turn the power off or reboot the system, extending running time. Plus, it removes the burden of having to swap your main battery in a very short time, which is not always practical. Using a battery charger, you can keep spares fully charged and take them with you. In situations where you can’t run on AC power or recharge batteries, this reserve power can make a significant difference.

For nurses or other mobile workers that select a device from a number of units on a charging rack, Panasonic has designed the C1 to clearly indicate up to four charge levels at the front edge of the case. At a quick glance, you can tell how much power each battery has. Without this feature, machines would be selected at random. If a device with a low charge was chosen, the battery could die during offsite duties – resulting in significant downtime and lost productivity.  Of course, the ability to swap in a charged spare could help mitigate that.

Heart of Borneo Expedition Team uses Toughbook 30 in Rainforest Exploration - Tuesday, August 16, 2011

The Heart of Borneo is a sustainably managed and extremely biodiverse rainforest found in Borneo, the world’s third largest island, located in Southeast Asia. This area is shared between Indonesia in the south and Malaysia and Brunei in the North. With roughly 140,000 miles of rainforest, this area of Borneo’s interior is almost completely unknown to science with over 50 new species discovered in the area over just the past five years.

To learn more about the island, a team of European and Indonesian explorers, scientists and filmmakers established the Heart of Borneo Charity to explore the unknown species and indigenous people in the region. The team’s research would in turn be used to inform the media, empower local people and provide teachers with an educational resource, which can potentially help conserve one of the most biodiverse and threatened areas of the rainforest.

“The Toughbook PCs have been solid and dependable. Not even a hiccup. Knowing we can rely on them to work has helped us sleep much better at night,” said Martin Holland, Founder and Executive Director of The Heart of Borneo Charity. “Being able to use them on location whatever the weather, out on boats or 5km into the rainforest from our camp has been incredibly helpful. The Toughbook units have been invaluable in saving the rainforest.”

Additionally, with the Toughbook computers’ exceptional battery life, the team was able to travel longer distances from the camp and conserve generator energy for extended periods of time. During the expedition, the team used the laptops to record results from “video trap” cameras looking to spot rare and new species.

“The water resistance and all around toughness and resilience against knocks and bumps have given us the confidence to speed up our research by taking them into the field,” said Martin. “The touchscreens make them very practical in the field and the antiglare screen makes working even in the direct sunlight of the tropics a breeze – something that amazes me every time.”
